About Us

As the season of 1969/70 drew to a close, two teams from Crosfield left their base at Hood Lane to travel up the A49 to Golborne Sports Club. This was when our story began.

In 1975, leagues were established for men's hockey, the Goblins (the touring name chosen by the team)were placed in Div 3. Back then, hockey was played on grass until the early 80's where the grass pitch at Golborne was abandoned and hockey was played on an all weather surface at Golborne High.

Fast forward 10 years and Golborne had formed a second X1 and hockey was now being played on Astroturf. As no local pitches were available in Golborne, the Goblins would travel to Horwich to play their games. In the mid 90's, thanks to Lottery grants and funding from the Council, Golborne Sports had their own pitch laid.

Mixed fortune for the club came in the late 90's, league promotions in consecutive years yet at the beginning of the millenium, players moved to new clubs and the youth had matured. The sad decision was made to leave league hockey, however spirit and determination of those at the club was not to be dampened and Golborne Hockey re-joined the North West Hockey League. Season 2002/2003 saw outstanding success with M1 crowned Div10 champions.

In Summer 2006, disillusionment amongst the men's 2nd XI at Leigh led them moving, en masse, to Golborne - allowing the club to re-introduce a second team into the NWHL. The M2 continued to grow and managed to fulfil its objective of offering competitive hockey for both old and new.

In 2009, Daten Hockey Club just down the road folded their men's section, leaving two ladies hockey sides at Daten. It was then the two club's merged and Daten ladies became Golborne Daten ladies based at Golborne Sports and Social Club. The merge saw the expansion of the club, with ex Daten player's returning, new ladies joining and friendships and relationships across the sections began - the beginning of our family community club.

Two successive league championships for the M1s between 2009-2011 attracted new players to the club. In September 2011, with efforts from Terry and Simon, the club entered a M3 into the league with a remit to bring through youngsters and back to hockey players.

Fast forward and Golborne Daten ladies dropped their Daten name. Word of the club spread far and wide and a need for L3 team was born. Thanks to brilliant efforts from Paul and Delta, the L3 entered CWHL div 6 for the 2017/2018 season. Now, in 2019/2020, we identified a need for a ladies fourth team, as our ladies section grows from strength to strength,it was only right we entered Golborne L4s into CWHL div 6, just two years after creating Golborne L3.

This leaves us constantly looking ahead. Golborne Hockey Club aims to continue to expand, celebrate success and enjoy our hockey. If you're interested in joining us, get in touch here.
